Di dunia internet sekarang layanan gratis sudah sangat jamak. Email gratis, bikin blog gratis, chatting gratis, telpon-telponan gratis, liat peta dunia gratis.. dan sebagainya. Mungkin salah satu yang masih cukup jarang kedengaran adalah hosting web gratis. Dulu hosting web ini sempat sangat populer di akhir 90-an. Ada Geocities, Tripod, Homestead, banyak deh. Sekarang beberapa layanan itu masih tetap hidup. Tapi ada kekurangan dari layanan-layanan tersebut, yaitu kita cuma bisa memasukkan halaman statik, tidak dinamik. jadi ya gak bisa bikin forum atau blog (kecuali mau ngedit file HTML-nya ampe mampus).
Namun ternyata, hosting web gratis tidak hanya terbatas di layanan seperti di atas. Ternyata banyak hosting gratis yang memungkinkan kita menjalankan script PHP, ASP, Perl, dan sebagainya lengkap dengan tersedianya basis data MySQL. Meski penampilannya (sangat) tidak meyakinkan, mendekati situs-situs yang penuh penipuan. Tapi karena tertarik, saya coba dan ada beberapa yang jalan.
Mungkin ini bisa jadi sebuah alternatif buat pada blogger untuk membuat blognya sendiri tanpa keterbatasan yang dimiliki oleh WordPress.com, Blogsome, Blogger, dan sebagainya. Seperti kita ketahui, layanan gratis tersebut banyak keterbatasannya. Misalnya di WordPress.com, kita tidak bisa menambahkan plugin dan membuat theme sendiri. Kostumisasi sangat sulit. Blogsome juga setali tiga uang. Meski bisa membuat tampilan sendiri, memasang plugin harus pakai akal-akalan dan satu hal yang tidak saya suka, masih menggunakan WordPress versi lama.
Tapi tunggu dulu, seperti layanan gratis lainnya, situs-situs ini memiliki beberapa kekurangan tentunya. Pasti ada sebuah harga yang harus dibayar untuk sebuah layanan gratis seperti ini. Layanan-layanan ini kebanyakan (atau sejauh ini yang berhasil saya temukan berjalan dengan baik) menambahkan iklan di bagian atas halaman kita, apapun halaman itu. Ya.. namanya juga gratis.
Tapi meskipun ada iklan itu, janji-janji situs ini boleh juga. Kapasitasnya boleh dibilang banyak dalam satu account. Ada yang 100 MB, 300 MB, bermacam-macam. Terus bandwith per bulannya juga lumayan besar, ada yang 2 GB, 5GB, bahkan 20 GB. Saya belum menguji mengenai kapasitas ini, tapi tawarannya boleh juga gak sih?
Dari beberapa situs yang menawarkan layanan ini, ada satu yang saya coba sebagai sampel:

Layanan ini baru saya coba kemarin. Fasilitas yang disediakan adalah ruang sebesar 200 MB, Bandwith 10 GB, dukungan CGI, PHP, SSI, FrontPage Extensions, Perl, Memiliki CPanel, dan akses melalui FTP dan Browser. Iklan ada, berupa banner Google Adwords di atas situs. Saya mencoba untuk melakukan instalasi WordPress di sana, dan banner tersebut dapat terlihat seperti di kiri.
Tambahan, mungkin kalau ada yang ingin eksplorasi untuk menghilangkan Banner tersebut, banner tersebut dibangkitkan oleh program JavaScript. Jadi jika JavaScript di Browser dimatikan, banner tersebut tidak ada. Ada yang tau caranya mematikan JavaScript yang dijalankan daris sisi server? Haha.. Tapi jangan ah, itu kan sumber pendapatan dia.
Selain situs ini, saya sempat mencoba OpenSwarm, 275mb, ByteHost, dan Manic Free Hosting. Untuk OpenSwarm dan 275Mb, bannernya terlalu besar, bahkan lebih besar dari ServerHeaven. Di ByteHost, saya dapat email konfirmasi tapi gak kunjung bisa login di CPanelnya. Di Manic Free Hosting lebih parah, email konfirmasinya nggak datang-datang.
Untuk ByteHost, ternyata setelah beberapa hari saya bisa login ke panelnya, namun sampai saat ini saya belum mencobanya. Panelnya sih bagus. Buat yang tertarik, sepertinya situs ini layanannya bagus. Oh iya, yang penting buat dia kalo ngedaftar tidak menggunakan email gratisan seperti Yahoo!, Gmail, dan Hotmail.
Oh iya selain situs di atas, ada beberapa situs yang ketika saya mencoba mendaftar, tidak mau menerima saya, karena dia melihat IP dan tidak mau menerima IP di luar daerah yang dia tangani. Jadi layanannya terbatas.
Jadi kesimpulan saya dari hasil perjalanan ke situs-situs ini, hosting web gratis kebanyakan tidak meyakinkan. Memberi janji-janji tinggi, tapi layanannya tidak bagus. Dan lagi, situs anda akan dipenuhi oleh iklan-iklan yang ukurannya sangat besar. Beberapa situs yang menjanjikan tidak ada iklan malah tidak bisa mendaftar. Saya pribadi lebih memilih layanan yang berbayar. Saya cukup puas dengan layanan yang diberikan oleh tempat hosting saya sekarang. Kalau mau bikin blog sederhana saja, cukup mendaftar ke layanan-layanan seperti yang saya sebutkan di atas. Forum juga begituAda yang punya pendapat lain?
